SEND or SEN or ASN or ALN basics and what schools must publish

  • send
  • sen
  • additional-needs

Summary

SEND, SEN, ASN and ALN are terms used across the UK for children and young people who need extra support to access education. England commonly uses SEND or SEN. Scotland uses additional support needs, often shortened to ASN. Wales uses additional learning needs, shortened to ALN. Northern Ireland uses special educational needs.

For buyers, the label matters less than the practical evidence. Check what the school must publish, such as the SEN information report in England, ALN information in Wales, additional support arrangements in Scotland and the relevant school or authority information in Northern Ireland. Then verify what support is actually available, who coordinates it, how transitions are handled, what specialist provision exists, and whether wraparound care can support the child’s needs.

Definition

SEND, SEN, ASN and ALN are national or local terms for additional educational needs and support. They describe children and young people who may require special educational provision, additional support, additional learning provision or reasonable adjustments depending on the legal framework in each UK nation.
