Property Flood Resilience Code of Practice: picking measures by depth and duration

Summary

Property Flood Resilience measures should be chosen according to the likely flood characteristics, not by buying random flood products. Depth, duration, source, velocity, contamination, warning time and building construction all affect whether resistance measures, recoverability measures or both are appropriate. The Code of Practice is the best framework for making that decision proportionately.

Definition

The Property Flood Resilience Code of Practice is CIRIA guidance for selecting, designing, installing and maintaining measures that reduce flood damage and speed recovery. Resistance measures aim to keep water out, such as barriers and non return valves. Recoverability measures reduce damage if water enters, such as flood compatible materials and raised services. Buyers should align measures to expected flood depth, duration, velocity, source and warning time, and should consider professional assessment where risk is material.
