Ofsted report cards and evaluation areas

  • ofsted
  • inspection

Summary

Ofsted report cards are the newer inspection reporting format for education providers in England. They are designed to show strengths and areas for improvement across separate evaluation areas instead of reducing a school to one overall judgement.

For a home buyer or parent, the important point is that the report card is not a single school rating. It should be read alongside the narrative findings, safeguarding outcome, pupil context, performance data, admissions likelihood, travel practicality and local knowledge. A school can look strong in one evaluation area and weaker in another, so the safest approach is to read the full report rather than relying on a headline grade.

Definition

Ofsted report cards are inspection reports for education providers in England that present colour coded grades across different evaluation areas, supported by written descriptions and a safeguarding judgement. They replace the previous single overall judgement approach for state funded schools and other covered education providers.
