Cable and DOCSIS explained

  • broadband
  • cable
  • docsis

Summary

Cable broadband commonly uses hybrid fibre coaxial networks and DOCSIS technology. It can offer very high downloads, but upload speeds and busy period behaviour may differ from FTTP.

Definition

Cable broadband in the UK usually refers to hybrid fibre coaxial networks, where fibre is used in the network and coaxial cable is used for the final access connection. DOCSIS is the technical standard that lets broadband data run over that cable network. Cable can deliver ultrafast or gigabit class download speeds, but packages often have lower upload speeds than many FTTP products. When comparing a property, check download speed, upload speed, minimum speed information, contract terms and whether the address is served by an existing cable socket or needs an engineer visit.
