Broadband and mobile: availability checks, contract terms and mid contract price rules

Summary

Broadband and mobile quality can vary sharply by exact address, postcode and provider. A buyer should check fixed broadband availability, likely speed tier, network technology and mobile coverage for each main network before moving. The presence of a provider in an area does not guarantee the same experience at every property.

Contract terms also matter. From 17 January 2025, new phone, broadband and pay TV contracts cannot use inflation linked or percentage based mid contract price rise terms. Any in contract price rises must be shown clearly in pounds and pence before signup. Older contracts may still have legacy terms, so households should check the actual contract wording.

Definition

Broadband and mobile availability describes which fixed broadband and mobile services are likely to be available at a property or postcode, including standard, superfast or ultrafast broadband and predicted mobile coverage by provider. Contract terms define minimum term, price, expected increases, exit rights and any in contract rises.
